pet insurance

By Saber - Posted on 14 June 2010

Please suggest a good, reliable pet insurance for my 11 weeks old furbaby.

Thank you!

Hello,
Pet insurance is a fantastic way to ensure that your four-legged family member is covered if anything was to happen to them. Whether that is covered for a cat insurance or dog insurance make sure you get pet cover for the unexpected.

Thanks

Hi Saber, thought I would chip in! I also don't have pet insurance. The reason is because it costs a lot of money. Insurance doesn't cover everything, your dog's illness or injury has to fit into their list. Every time we're paid we each put away $25 into a special fund for our dog just in case we have to take her to the emergency vet. We thought that doing this would make the money available any time for any reason no matter how or why she's sick.

Of course you should look into it anyways so that you can make the right choice for your little furbaby. My friend has pet insurance, I think it is Pet Secure or is it Pet Care? If you google them you can find them. (sorry I don't remember the exact name) She has been happy with it, they paid for her dog's surgery when he got hit by a car.

Hi Saber and SheltieMom,
I have three cats and have often thought about pet insurance, but there are limitations, as you mentioned.
I really like your idea about tucking a little away each time you get paid for any emergencies!
To expand on that concept, if you are involved in a family or community that you are close to and are all pet owners, have every member contribute a set amount to a fund each month and then you all have access to that pot should an emergency arise.
Exactly how insurance started hundreds of years ago!!

Interesting idea, Whisker Tickles. I wonder how one fairly divides the funds? One person's dog might need a lot more vet care, or more expensive vet care, or more regular vet care, than another dog. Would that mean they can still access these funds the same as every other member in the group? What happens when the funds are depleted and there are none available for the next person's pet emergency?

Like I said, interesting idea, I only wonder how it would work from a practical standpoint.

Hi Ron,
Interesting idea for a community or family who is close enough to make it work :) May not be practical for "acquaintances only." It would definitely require some research, planning and formulating procedure and legalities. Like anything new, it would also provide some growing pains, to be sure.
Not a simple solution, but sometimes we have to think creatively when it comes to finances, LOL.

Thanks SheltieMom!

Hi! We don't use pet insurance ourselves so I can't recommend a company. Our vet has brochures for pet insurance in the clinic, maybe yours does too or maybe they can recommend one for you? Here is also an article on comparing pet insurance plans. The article is about midway down the page. Hope you find something!

Thank you'ilove dogs'. My vet has suggested one but i want to be sure it's the best and thought feedback from other pet owners would be good before making the decision.
