Will Neuter lessen aggression with other male dogs?

By drmom359 - Posted on 27 September 2009

I have a 5 year old cross Shepard/Dane who I adopted one year ago. As his health and weight improves, he is becoming stronger and is much harder to walk as when I got him. He is 110 lbs. He becomes very aggressive with other large male dogs to the point where he dragged me across a road to attack another dog...may have broke my wrist...ouch!

Unfortunately, we are now using a muzzle.

I have not fixed him yet as his dental work has cost a fortune. I have been told that getting him fixed will be the answer. I am leary about putting any more money out at this point and am wondering if anyone has any personal experience with a dog getting fixed resulting in less aggression.

The younger the dog is neutered, the more effective it is at lessening a dog's aggression. It never eradicates it completely, as it should, as it is just doggy nature! Also, dog's still tend to hump things even after the op!

I totally agree with the previous comment. There's no doubt neutering will alleviate some of the aggression especially toward other unaltered males, but seeing as he is already 5 years old, some of his tendencies will still be there.
I had a somewhat aggressive dog too and the only thing that I found helpful was when I took him to doggie daycare and he learned how to play properly from the other dogs. You may have to start off slower at first in a smaller obedience class and then find a local daycare to enroll him in even just once a week for the socialization, and you'll notice many other benefits in your dog as well. Hope that helps!

Hi! Neutering does help a lot but can you take him to doggy school too? Our dog used to be fearful and socialization classes helped a lot. Our walks are a lot nicer now that our dog is calm and happy and not scared of other people or pets! Here is an article from the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies about aggression in dogs. I hope it helps! http://cfhs.ca/athome/dog_biting/
