My male dog and Female dog in heat

I have a year and a half old lab/pit mix and she is in heat. This is her 2nd heat. I also have a black lab/ golden retriever mix and he does not want anything to do with my female while she is in heat. What causes this because I know this is not normal. I am not trying to get her preg by this dog but he doesn't even play with her now. any suggestions????
