People who don't pick up after their dogs

By furkids - Posted on 16 November 2008

Hi! I'm new here and hope to meet some other pet owners!

I'm wondering if anyone has had a problem with neighbours letting their dogs poop on other people's lawns? I have two sweet pups myself and I love all dogs, however I don't love all dog owners! We have an alley behind our house which is gravel (and some weeds unfortunately lol) and for some reason there are a couple of dogs that keep pooping there, RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR GATE!

This has happened to a few other neighbours too who share the alley. We have talked about it and two of them say it's actually just one woman (with two dogs) who takes her dogs out after dark and lets them poop anywhere and doesn't pick up after them! I haven't caught her at it myself. The two neighbours who have seen it have confronted the woman and asked her to clean up after her dogs and she always denies it's her dogs (even when they've just watched it from their windows!) and tells them to mind their own business.

What can we do? Our city has a poop-and-scoop bylaw which she obviously doesn't care about. It's really gross and I have stepped in the "offerings" many times especially when I'm out in the dark. It's disgusting.

Thanks for everyone's input!

Yes, having a dog is definitely a huge responsibility. We almost need to have pet owner training just as much as dog behavior training.

I moved into the perfect apartment downtown, and right away noticed that somebody was letting their dog shit right on the sidewalk outside my apartment steps. Try as I might I couldnt find out who was being such a jerk. I debated on what to do. Call the Police? They have better things to do and would no doubt do nothing, I mean what could they do? Take a few days off work and spy on the area to find out who is doing it? Yeah right, I can't do that. Wait to catch the offender someday? Oh right, that may never happen, and even if I did catch them they don't have to stop when Im not around. So in the end I put up a sign saying "Its the law, clean up after your dog, Dont be a lazy scumbag!" Well what do you know, the poop stopped appearing for two weeks. Then, someone posted a sign right next to mine, attacking my sign and myself as being rude and anti-dog. Additionally the shit was back. I was pissed. Well, I finally found out who it is, and I am declaring war. I plan on shitting in a ziplock bag and depositing my shit on their steps. War

I forgot to mention that there are no fences separating houses in this community. It's almost as if all of the outdoors is a huge common area so when my neighbor dumps her dog's waste around the bushes near my home, she can always claim the bushes are part of the common area...
My issue is not with her dog defecating on my property -he sticks to her yard- but with her not picking up the waste and leaving it for her neighbors to see and smell for days at a time.

You have to make time for this and it is refreshing.

Send her a nice note first, then a warning re bi-laws.

If this does not work, it's payback!

Just pick up their dogs fresh poop and put it on their property.

If this owner does not get the message then just smear the fresh poop
on her door handles.

The message will get across

I don't own a dog because I travel a lot so I can't properly take care of one but I love dogs and someday I will adopt one.
I live in a rather expensive community of townhouses and there are many rules and regulations regarding what you can and can not do outside your home. One of these rules regards picking up dog waste and the heavy fines to offenders.
One of my neighbors owns a very cute, small dogs but she does not pick up after him. She lets him out late in the night or early in the morning for the dog to do its business while she watches from her back door -then she brings him back inside.
Sometimes days will go by -even as far as a whole week- and the dog waste will be laying all over her open backyard or even her own cement porch.
The only times she picks up the dog feces is when she'll be spending time outdoors and on a few of those infrequent occasions, I have caught her (and also her visiting relatives)scoop the waste and walk it to neighboring bushes (in front of MY porch) and dump it there.
This is the first thing I see in the morning, when I open my upstairs bedroom windows or when I go out on my back porch to water plants... mounds of dog poop sitting everywhere for days at a time. It's SO disgusting and so against health regulations!

I don't know what to do. I'm relatively new to this community and my husband is out of town a lot for work reasons so I'm mostly alone here. I don't want to get into disputes with my neighbors.
I have contacted the HOA but annonymously and nothing came out of that; except for a brief reminder in the monthly newsletter for dog owners to pick after their dogs.
As if THAT is going to stop them!

Why do "seemingly" decent people behave this way? They KNOW that what they are doing is wrong; otherwise they wouldn't be "skulking" around when they're dumping feces in other people's bushes or common areas. Yet they continue to do it...
How would they feel if someone sent their toddler to their yard and allow him/her to defecate on their lawn; reasoning that "it's natural"...?

PLEASE, ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I think bylaw officers should be able to demand any person walking a dog show proof of having something-e.g.poopie bags in their possession when walking their dogs and ticket people who don't.
It's your duty and responsibility people! If you don't wanna pick up after your dog don't own one!! Stop making places unplesant for every one else.

....SUGGESTION:.....Next time she is found to have let her dogs defecate on/near your property without removing same....Get a long handled shovel....pick up the offending material....try to keep it on the tip of the shovel (for better accuracy and distance)....and walk down to her backyard fence and fling the poop over the fence and into her yard. I have found that it only takes 3-4 flings of the offensive material for the thought to sink in....Good Luck

I am so angry about the fact that I have neighbors who try to be slick. What was a nice condo here in Scottsdale Az is no more thanks to inconsiderate, slick, lazy uncouth dog owners who don't scoop after their dogs. They wait until late at night or early are to use your living area for their dog's bathroom and just leave it for you to look at and smell. Imagine cleaning up bagful of poop throughout the week. Calling office is of no consequence. You get, "it will be taken care of by cleaning crew"-NOT. If you don't do it, you’re looking at and smelling mounds of poop. I apologize for sounding off in this matter but just got so frustrated and overwhelmed.

My 2lggd parents take me for a walk by the lake in a nice area. Even I can read that all dogs must be on a leash and the Humans are to pick up after dogs. I guess most 2lggd creatures cannot read. If they do pick up they leave the bags all over the place despite there being several garbage cans available. And they let their kids run loose! At one end of this area is a very large official off leash park. As usual there is never a police officer (or bylaw officer) around when you need one.

I am a total dog lover, have two, but always clean up after them when walking. Our city provides free plastic bags and a disposal area that is always maintained. There is absolutely no reason for people to ignore the by-law. It is just being considerate for the rest of the world - - there's nothing worse than that surprise of a "skid"! I wished I knew the answer.

The worst time was when someone let their dog poop on our lawn, right beside my son's bike. They obviously knew it was the wrong thing to do because they put a handful of leaves over it! I didn't notice it and my son stepped and SLID in it! If only people would pick up the poop it's really not that hard!

By the way we have a sweet little poodle and we are dog lovers!

The worst is on our park pathways! All along the pathway are poop piles. They melt into the snow and the whole pathway is studded with these piles. It is so gross. I have a dog but I do not walk him there anymore because it's so unpleasant dodging these piles! It only takes a few seconds to pick up after your dog I wish people would remember that the pathways are for everyone to enjoy.

Hi there furkids!

I am new to this site also; only posted a message twice so far.

I absolutely hate inconsiderate pet owners!!!! Luckily I haven't had that happen too much in our area ... yet. But then again, we just got our little bullie in September and haven't taken him everywhere in the neighbourhood yet.

What about a call to the Bylaw people? If they say they can't do anything because they need proof, I would take a picture of the 'culprit' in action and the call the Bylaw. I am sure they would love to have the picture as evidence and go and speak to this unsavoury neighbour.

Hope this helps.

I totaly agree with you, But i don't know what the answer is,I have always picked up after my 2 dogs and always will. The only time I didn't was when it was so runny and it was raining very hard so I knew it would be washed away I did pick up what i could. The worst I think is when a very large dog poops right on the sidewalk.I think the only thing we can do is keep confronting these people and maybe one or two will get the hint. so all you dog owners PICK UP AFTER YOUR FUR CHILD

You know what I did? I know it sounds gross and unkind, but I was so angy . . . I gathered up all the poop and neatly deposited it on her back step with a sign that said, I see you dropped this and I wanted to return it. She got rid of her dogs after that, so our neighborhood lucked out. It could so easily have escalated into all out war.

I love it, alphamom. Yes I know it sounds "unkind" but anyone who lets their dog poop wherever they want and then don't clean up after them, well that's unkind too!

Had to chuckle when I read your post because I "vented" much the same comments after clearing up the area outside of our backyard.

We back onto a municipal berm and constructed a "back door" onto it as our 14 year old golden Wizard seems to find the grass...albeit often frozen...more "forgiving" for his hips than the sidewalks.

Unfortunately the area immediately outside our fence line seems to have become quite a "dumping ground" for other dog owners whose dogs are no doubt "attracted" to Wizard and our 19 month Mystic.

I "poopy-scooped" one day and accumulated quite the "pile", literally and figuratively and observed that no wonder some people "hate" dogs...perhaps more to the point dog-owners. It would take no time for the owners walking the same to bend down and "poop-scoop". Just gives the "dog-haters" another reason to complain when a child steps into something, etc.

No excuses....

Hi, I am agree with all of you it is really impolite...I also own a dog, I train her to go and poo in our bathroom, she has a special place, she does, then we clean immediately and go out just for a walk. I have done it, because I had a problem with neighbours..before my "current " dog I also owned a dog 2- 3 years ago, whenever I take him for a walk I always take with me package for picking up..but one of my neighbours start to blame us that my dog is always pooing under their window :) they made me crazy even I wanted to take that "pee" to analyse :D ..so I decided in order not to have any problems and conflicts with neighbours to train my dogs in future to do it at home then to mess around neighbours.
