injured cat

By paradise2b - Posted on 08 December 2008

My 5-year cat took a flying leap off the deck 2 1/2 weeks ago, after being startled by an unexpected visitor. She fell about 15 feet to the ground, and tore ligaments in her back right leg. I took her to the vet, who sedated her and applied a splint which was removed on the 5th day. She was on pain meds for a week following, and it seemed she was starting to gain some mobility. Although eating and drinking little, she has been content and sociable whenever we come to check on her, but limits her activity and keeps to herself. The last two days she has greatly reduced the amount of moving around, and is clearly experiencing pain again. She doesn't use the injured leg hardly at all. Has anyone had a similar experience? The vet said earlier she may require surgery or amputation, both not really being an option because of the expense. It breaks my heart to face the decision to put her to sleep, as she has never been sick before and is young, and I rescued her as an abandoned kitten. Is there any hope she will recover without further intervention?

Hey, I am happy for you that your cat is feeling little bit better now~ Hope that she recovers pretty soon and hear a good news from you soon!!~

If she does need surgery check with your local cat charities, spca, vets or animal shelters. My friends dog got hit by a car and he couldn't afford the operation on it's hip. He ended up finding a vet to do it that had a donation fund set up for animals that had been hurt and needed expensive operations. I'm glad to hear your cat is doing better though!!

Cheers

Neighbors found our cat today lying in beside the road. She hurts badly in her hips, her top front teeth (fangs) are broken off and bottom fang is broken in the gums. Only one other abrasion on one of her legs. She won't/can't stand, so how/what do I do for her kitty duties (toilet)? I'm giving her water through a suringe. tomorrow is Saturday and vets aren't open except emergencies.

Hopefully you cat heals soon , since she can bend the arm and everything, just give it more time, cats usually heal fast.. )) Best wishes

Hi everybody, I'm new here. Thanks for being a part of this community. Cheers.

Hi all,

New to the forum, just thought I'd introduce myself :-)

Hi! Sorry to hear about your cat. I have a friend whose dog severely injured her hip. They scraped together money for the surgery only the vet said the dog might need another surgery and my friend didn't have the money. They put the dog on "crate rest" for a few months. They confined the dog in a small space most of the time and didn't let her go for walks, jump on couches, all the usual stuff the dog would do. After 3 or 4 months (I don't remember exactly) the dog was good as new. Well, almost. They had to walk her slowly at first but now she's perfect.

Maybe this would work for your cat too, I don't know. If you splint her leg again and make sure she doesn't jump, run, climb, or do anything strenuous, maybe she can recover. Ask your vet if this will work. Hopefully it does and your cat will be okay again.

An update on my kitty - I did some research, and located a homeopathic vet in my area. She recommended a homeopathic preparation called Traumeel, which I give in drop form twice a day. It is recommended in all soft-tissue injuries, to promote healing and recovery while also relieving pain. I am pleased to say I have seen tremendous improvement. While she still limps (this may never totally go away) she is doing stairs several times a day, interacts well with other pets and with humans, and her appetite has improved. Every week seems to be that much better. I am so pleased and grateful for the advise of this vet; it sickens me to think I may have acted on the recommendation to have that leg amputated. (By the way I spent $25 on Traumeel - a fraction of what surgery would have cost!)

Thanks for taking the time to write, and for your encouragement and helpful suggestions. I took her back to the vet yesterday, and got the same 2 choices: amputation or surgery, both expensive. But he gave me another bottle of pain medication, and today for the first time I saw her attempt to do stairs (not allowed, so I encouraged her back down) and bend her knee -- positive signs, I'm hoping. After doing some research on the net, it seems that cat injuries like this are very rare compared to dogs, and they have a much better healing mechanism, so I'm hoping with rest and lots of love, she'll come around without further painful medical intervention. Anyway, we're going to try our best to get through this!
