Fellow Pet Lover who wishes all stories turned out like ours

By FibreHeart - Posted on 02 July 2010

Hi, everyone.

My name is Mandy and I recently became a dog owner a little over a year ago.

I was only just looking when I stumbled across an ad that said Wheaten/Schnauzer cross for free.

He was 18 mths and you never, ever get a dog that young for free. So I called.

The breeder who had a farm needed to get rid of him because he was disruptive to her other dogs. He put one in the hospital while they were fighting over females.

She told me he came from a long line of fearful, nervous dogs and she tried to sell him 4 times and he kept getting brought back.

Then this woman told me that if she couldn't get rid of him she was going to have him destroyed.

Well as soon as I heard this I wanted to save his life. There is no way that he could not be that bad. She tried really hard to talk me out of it. For real! I was really embarrassed for her. I told her that will not let her kill that dog and to get him over to my house pronto.

Well, eventually my sister went and picked him up and my heart just broke and fell in love at the same time.

He would not get out of the car. My Bro-in-law had to lift him out. He was a giant ball of soft curly fur. But he was filthy, matted badly and when you look in his eyes there was nothing. No light, no personality, Nothing. I have never, ever seen that before.

I wished he'd understand how sorry I was this had happened.

Anyway, we've had our ups and downs over the year. He loves to bolt out the front door for a jaunt through traffic, he hates my husband, although he is starting to let him touch him. And he barks at every little sound.

He is very special to me. I'm sure he will let go of all that other stuff. He has come such a long way over the year and he keeps getting better everyday.

I wish and hope there are a lot more stories with this kind of happy ending.

Mandy
